Drawing the forest


I initially wanted to do the drawing style to be quite angelic then turn to look darker. So I began to draw the light forest in this way, however it just didn't seem to look how I wanted it. This is when I decided that I wanted the whole video to look very sketchy and unfinished. So, I re-drew the light, then made the dark side. I used the same initial drawing to make both forests just didn't colour in the dark side. For the dark side I decided to make it so it was going from light to dark, with the darkest part being the middle of the picture, I did this because it showed that he was leaving the light and turning towards the darkness (depression).

Drawing the character

I began by coming up with some initial sketches of what the character would look like. I wanted him to be wearing baggy clothes and it shows that he is insecure within himself, also I felt that it would create really cool texture within the character. Based off of these initial sketches I came up with more that would be used for the final video. Since I had already drawn out story boards I knew the kind of things that I would need him to be doing, for instance I needed him to be running for one part, or for him to be just a white outline for bits of the video. I decided that with the art style I wanted to have the animations be frame by frame drawn out, this is difficult because it's lots of drawing but it creates a really cool sketchy effect. Drawing the butterfly

I decided that to add motion to the original scenery, I am going to have some butterflies flying around the trees. Then when the scenery turns dark they will go red, and disappear. I started by looking into butterflies, I chose for the butterfly that I am using is going to be a blue morpho, this is because they are very distinctive and look surreal which is the effect I want to have in the sunny scenery. I began by drawing a general shape of a blue morpho, I did this using the symmetry tool. I then coloured it by looking at a reference image. I then wanted to create a dark version that I would switch for the dark version, when the person runs past. I did this by duplicating the butterfly, then changing the hue and saturation to make it red.

Inspiration for scenery

Originally for the scenery of the piece I wanted it to be similar to the river in York, this is because it had the exact type of view that I wanted, it has a path to run on, grass, trees and a river. However, since I am currently in Newcastle, it is very difficult to find reference images to base my drawings off of. I was on a jog around the area that I live in, and found a forest I didn't realise was there 😂 and realised that it was also the perfect scenery, so I took lots of photos of it for my reference images. I then made them images into contact sheets.
